Among the many financial management software options, MoneyManagerEx stands out for its completeness and ease of use, as well as for being multiplatform. In fact, in addition to alternatives for Linux, Mac, and Windows, there is also a Mobile version for Android. Unfortunately, synchronization between devices is only available if you use Dropbox, Google Drive, or another cloud service. But is it possible to synchronize without necessarily using the cloud? Obviously, the answer is certainly yes if you know how to do it.
Do you remember the synchronization software Syncthing that I already wrote an article about? Thanks to this software, we can synchronize folders between our phone and our home PC so that the file remains synchronized across all devices with the latest changes made.
This simple but powerful trick basically allows us to do two things: the first is not to share such sensitive files with Dropbox or Google, which we know have the ability to access their products and read the content (even if Money Manager Ex encrypts the file), and the second is not necessarily having to have an account or subscription with any cloud service.
Needless to say, I tried the solution and Syncthing really does an excellent job.
MoneyManagerEX is an excellent application that rivals proprietary software and can be used to keep track of all expenses, make a monthly estimate of the costs related to our purchases, but also curb our spending by setting budgets for types of products, for example, groceries, which are currently increasing significantly, at least in Italy.
The expense reports help us get an overview of our spending while also analyzing the transactions made daily, monthly, and annually, and producing charts for each category analyzed.
Highly customizable, even in its appearance with different and pleasant interfaces, it ultimately proves to be an excellent tool to use both at home and on the go, thanks, as mentioned, to synchronization through Syncthing.
